{"id":1344,"date":"2022-10-16T18:45:32","date_gmt":"2022-10-16T18:45:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/semihhalezeroglu.vl-staging.com\/areas-of-interest\/bronchiectasis\/"},"modified":"2023-01-19T22:16:19","modified_gmt":"2023-01-19T22:16:19","slug":"bronchiectasis","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/semihhalezeroglu.com\/en\/areas-of-interest\/bronchiectasis\/","title":{"rendered":"Bronchiectasis"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is Bronchiectasis?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Bronchiectasis is the permanent enlargement of the bronchi as a result of damage to the airways (bronchus) in the lung.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Causes Bronchiectasis?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Usually, bronchial damage occurs due to childhood infections (such as measles and pertussis).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Past tuberculosis (tuberculosis)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Immune system disorders (hypogammagolobulinemia)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Congenital bronchial disorders (such as Kartogenar syndrome)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cystic fibrosis<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Foreign objects (nuts, peanuts, eraser tips, pins, etc.) escaping into the windpipe<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Some rare benign bronchial tumors (such as carcinoid tumors) may also cause bronchiectasis.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In many patients, no obvious cause can be found.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are the Symptoms that Occur in Patients with Bronchiectasis?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>cough<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>producing copious amounts of phlegm<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>frequent respiratory infections<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>weakness<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>slimming<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>shortness of breath<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>bad breath<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>developmental delay in children<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Is Bronchiectasis Diagnosed?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The diagnosis of bronchiectasis is usually made by the patient&#8217;s complaints and examination findings.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Complaints of frequent respiratory tract infections and profuse sputum production are quite evident.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Normal chest radiographs are not sufficient diagnostic tools.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>High resolution Computed Tomography is the most important diagnostic tool in the diagnosis of bronchiectasis.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bronchoscopy is not necessary in every patient.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"223\" src=\"https:\/\/semihhalezeroglu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/bronsektazi-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1346\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">CT image of our patient with bronchiectasis in the lower lobe of the left lung<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How is Bronchiectasis Treated?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It is primarily treated with antibiotics and breathing drugs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bronchial cleansing is achieved by applying the method of postural drainage (preferably in the morning, to ensure that patients cough up their sputum in certain positions)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>With respiratory physiotherapy, the lungs are strengthened and their capacity is increased.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If there is no response to the treatment, surgery is performed<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lung transplantation is necessary if both lungs are severely ill<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In Which Situation Is Bronchiectasis Surgery Necessary?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If it is not possible to be treated with drugs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If the patient&#8217;s quality of life deteriorates<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In case of coughing up blood from the mouth<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If there is inflammation in the lung cavity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If frequent hospitalization is required<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are the Bronchiectasis Surgery Methods?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Open surgery (thoracotomy) performed by opening between the ribs has left its place to the closed (VATS-Thoracoscopy) method.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The surgical method to be preferred in bronchiectasis is closed surgery called ONE PORT VATS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bronchiectasis surgery is performed to improve the quality of life. For this reason, closed surgery method is preferred.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Closed Surgery in Bronchiectasis (Single Port VATS)<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>In this method, an incision of 3 or 4 cm is made, from which a camera and additional surgical instruments are advanced. The diseased lung lobe is removed without expanding the ribs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The operation takes approximately 2 hours. Patients are discharged within 3 or 4 days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As post-surgery pain is much less, returning to normal life is significantly faster than open surgery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/semihhalezeroglu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/bronsektazi-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1349\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Bronchiectasis \u2013 view after closed surgery<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are the Risks of Bronchiectasis Surgery?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>There are risks such as post-surgery bleeding, pneumonia, infection, and air leakage from the lungs.
