Lung Cysts and Treatment

Cysts in the lung can be congenital or acquired. This page contains information about lung cysts in adults.

These are simple lung cysts caused by smoking, air pollution, cysts due to infections (hydatid cyst – canine cyst), cysts that may occur after a trauma, or cysts that occur in adulthood due to congenital defects.

Lung Cyst Treatment Methods

Treatment may not be necessary for small and asymptomatic (incidentally detected) lung cysts. Patients are followed up closely so that the cyst does not enlarge and cause any problems.

  • In hydatid cysts, if the patient has a complaint or not, they should be treated.
  • In cystic fibrosis disease, lung transplantation is performed in cases that cannot be controlled by medical treatment.

Why is Lung Cyst Surgery Necessary?

Surgical intervention is performed in order to eliminate the complications (problems) caused by the lung cyst or to prevent future complications (such as bleeding, infection, transformation into cancer and pressure on the surrounding structures).

What are the Surgical Methods in Lung Cyst?

CLOSED OPERATION (VATS) should be preferred instead of open operation in lung cyst operations.

CLOSED Operation with Single Incision (Single Port VATS):

In this method applied by us, the images taken with the help of the camera advanced through a single 2 cm incision are projected onto the screen and the operation is performed through a 2 cm incision by looking at these images. On average, the patient leaves the hospital after 3 days. The patient can return to his normal life within 1 week after the operation.

The single-incision VATS method operation image we prepared for residents and specialists can be viewed below.

What are the Risks of Surgery in Lung Cyst?

The risks of the surgery are low. However, complications may occur depending on the age, general condition of the patient and whether there are additional diseases (such as heart diseases, hypertension, respiratory difficulties, diabetes, kidney diseases).

All risks should be determined in advance and necessary precautions should be taken and risks should be minimized.

How Many Days Should I Stay in the Hospital for Cyst Surgery?

After single port VATS surgeries, hospitalization is applied for 2 or 3 days.
